Australia will observe a day of mourning for Queen Elizabeth II Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed. Thursday, September 22 has been confirmed as a A National Day of Mourning he told the ABC. The public holiday is set to coincide with a memorial service for the Queen.
“It will be a one-off national public holiday to allow people to pay their respects for the passing of Queen Elizabeth,” he said.
“I spoke to all Premiers and chief ministers yesterday and I’m writing to them formally this morning, they will have received their letters by now. They have all agreed that it’s appropriate that it be a one-off national public holiday.”
Victorians, who also have a public holiday for the AFL Grand Final on Friday, September 23 will now get a 4-day long weekend.
Mr Albanese and Governor-General David Hurley are flying to London to attend the Queen’s funeral which has been confirmed to take place on Monday, September 19. Upon their return, Australia will observe the National Day of Mourning to pay respects to the Queen.
